SPEAKER_02

They want my money.

SPEAKER_00

This is Unnigerian Prince, the podcast where we talk about scams from everywhere else. Good morning, Noms.

SPEAKER_02

Good morning, Uko.

SPEAKER_00

How are you doing?

SPEAKER_02

I am, you know, I'm doing my best. I am. Okay, I say that because I just feel I feel a little bit burned out, I think. But I think what it is is the weather is so beautiful. You know, I'm in the office five days a week, Fridays included. And so I'm just looking at people running outside, having a good time. And I'm just like, oh, oh, okay. I feel like that squid word meme where he's just looking outside about to say that.

SPEAKER_01

And just looking out furious. Everybody in the world is just with their hands up. I hear it though. I feel someone rolls around and you have that feeling of missing out all the time. And like the older you get. Because when we're in college or younger, like you were really in the mix. And then I was like, you know, these bills have to get paid regardless, baby. They do not care what the weather what the weather is outside. Um, oh, but I'm sorry. Do you have any like holiday or trips coming up that you can take a breather?

SPEAKER_02

The only immediate one is to New York next week. Really looking forward to seeing you. But beyond that, I need to find a beach. I need to find a beach somewhere somehow and just lay.

SPEAKER_01

Let me tell you, we could go to far Rockaway. Now listen, it's not it's not Italy, but it's the best we got.

SPEAKER_02

Ma'am, we can't. And here I am thinking of, I'm over here thinking of the ABC Islands, and you're over here talking about Rockaway.

SPEAKER_01

Listen, do you want to beach not? I'm trying to help you. It's a New York is up right now. Um my New York pride has never been higher. So, you know, as somebody who's been in the city for cumulatively, I think it's eight years. So I think ten years makes you a New Yorker. So I'm just shy of my status. I believe in the Rockaways. I believe that if we close our eyes really hard, you could be in Italy. But you just need a beach, you didn't specify which one, so we could do that. This is this is true. This is true. Alright, alright. But how are you doing, Nams? I'm good. Sort of the same feelings. Been working a lot lately, so it's been quite busy on my end. But like I just said, the city is in a different like level of electricity. Everybody's so happy. I was outside when the next one. Granny was up way past her bedtime. It was incredible. The city was so alive, and I don't think there's been a moment in recent history, by that I mean like the last sort of four or five years, of that level of warmth and everyone being in this uplifted mood anywhere in America, and definitely in New York. Well, maybe when Mam Dani won, there was a spirit of joy, but I think that it was a political thing, so you know, I'm sure there were some people that didn't feel that same level of enthusiasm. But the Knicks is, you know, sports are like a global unifier, it was incredible, and I think we've been riding that high even now. The parade was just on Thursday. I had to go to work, and I'm also, you know, 75 years old. I did not want to be there, but I did enjoy like seeing the joy, you know, coming through, just walking by people, people are randomly throwing out high fives. I love it. Yeah, so while I've been physically tired, I think I've been emotionally recharged. Good.

SPEAKER_02

Good. I hope that electricity carries through on throughout the summer. And honestly, and throughout the next few years, this might just be a post-Eric Adams boom.

SPEAKER_01

I'm so serious. Genuinely, I think New York has suffered enough. Um I think it's time. It's time for something positive. And I'm just, I'm so glad to see it. Like, it's very, very, very, very difficult to be in a constant news cycle of doom and gloom and to start to see more joy. And I think people are also tired of being sad and unhappy. Because the speed at which the joy was embraced, I think is great. And there's always this thing about bandwagon fans. And I feel like this is the first time I've seen people want bandwagon fans. Yeah, we're on the bandwagon, but we're enjoying it. It doesn't matter. Climb this bandwagon, baby. Let's go. So it's been great. I am an honorary Knicks fan. I don't really watch basketball, but that is my team now. And I would not accept any slander about my boys. Alright, I I love that for you very much. Alright, so we hopped on and we wanted to give a quick little reflection review on the past five episodes of A Nigerian Prince. Ugo, I have some questions that I think we can bounce between each other about. And yeah, we just wanted to get a vibe of how everybody received it and what's coming down the pipeline. So my first question for you, Ugo, is I need to know what has been your favorite episode so far. Maybe I should say your favorite like major scam so far, and then your favorite scam scam so far. It doesn't have to be the same episode, whichever ones.

SPEAKER_02

Hmm, I would say that my favorite episode so far is probably the Harvard, you know, fake job episode. Because it was just so That was diabolical. Absurd. Because there were so many theories that were floating out there, right? Is this a state-backed operation? Is this a foreign actor? But the most likely theory is this random woman who just hates in India somewhere who is literally your biggest hater. Like, you know, I support hating. Like I'm a hater, you know, and I won't hate on someone and something that I disagree with through and through. Through and through. This is like she took her time, a full offer going after multiple people that she didn't like.

SPEAKER_01

That to me that that was your questions and had the lady sit there and respond to interview. She wrote an offer letter including benefits. You are psychotic. Yes.

SPEAKER_02

Like you need to be in the house.

SPEAKER_01

Call the lady, look around. Um, that was a great episode. I also really liked how you laid out that episode, Ugo, because you started off with like the it was like a teaser, like the little appetizer with the first two people who like almost fell for it, right? Yeah. And then I remember thinking, oh, okay, this is like not a good scam. Like, what are they doing? And then the deep dive into the person who really did fall for it and the fact that the scammers learned. Like the scammers got better. We don't want to see that. I still think about the part of that episode where you said, number you would be happy to know that they improved. And I was like, I'm not happy to know. Actually, no. I don't want any improvement. Yes, that was a really, really, really good episode and really well researched. Well done.

SPEAKER_02

Thank you, thank you. And I would say for the scam scam, honestly, my favorite one was probably the one that you told about our Nigerian brothers and their trip at getting scammed out of Airbnb money. Oh, because that would just ruin my like that. But that happened. And I'm just like, you grown adult men were in a room together. Wow. I am so sorry.

SPEAKER_01

You know what pains me about that one too? It was New Year's. Like, New Year's is my favorite holiday ever. And I like New Year's because there's this concept of growth, something different. There's hope. Everybody's so happy over New Year's. You always got the people that are like, oh, we were wolves. New Year's is really a spring. Whatever. But like for the most part, people are like very, very happy over New Year's. They can leave last year behind. They're hopeful, they have plans. And in case like, hope is not a strategy, but it is a discipline. And hope is my favorite of the disciplines.

SPEAKER_02

And that's something that's such a beautiful saying.

SPEAKER_01

Thank you. I don't think I came up with it. I think it's two separate sayings that I just conjoined, but thanks for it. It doesn't matter, it's yours now. But it's generally it's my favorite of the disciplines. It's extremely difficult to do. And I think New Year's everybody sort of practices that knowingly or unknowingly during the new year. But how you enter the new year, and I'm this is a superstitious thing, you know, we are Nigerians, sorry. But how you enter the new year for me frames that what that year is going to give.

SPEAKER_02

Yes.

SPEAKER_01

How can I enter New Year with Scott? No, no, no, no, no, no, no. This is not what we discuss. I'm with you. I'm with you. I would have to go for a fresh baptism that yeah.

SPEAKER_02

Because God, if this is a year of scuming, better undo it. Yeah. Like in fact, be baptized in the ocean. It can't be a bathtub. Oh, we're going straight to the body. Sprinkle, sprinkle.

SPEAKER_01

The same place they baptize Jesus, they will baptize me again. Because what is going on? I remember, I remember when Beads was telling me this story, and I just I had tears in my eyes because I was like, how can this happen?

SPEAKER_02

Yeah, I know. I feel like if you don't get it right on, you know, January 1st, now give a little bit of grace the first week of January, right? To have your intention set for the full year, you don't have that opportunity again, realistically, until September. To me, September feels like another fresh new month for things to kick off. And so you were just shit out of luck for those couple of months.

SPEAKER_01

And it's just gonna be crap for nine months, and you just have to take it. Sorry, babes. Like plan better. I know, like the new year's is, and I'll tell you also, I had one New Year's, 2018. I had a new year's. It was actually like an okay one, but it just in my body, I knew that I shouldn't spend my new year like this. I'd gone to a dinner and it was just it was okay. And I got home and it was just okay. And I like high points in my New Year's Eve. Like whether I'm in church, whether I'm in a dinner, whether I'm a like at some kind of ball, but it needs to have a high point. This was fairly flat. Somebody understands what I'm saying, but there was no nuance to the night. You know, there was no ball drop. It was just like at the end, somebody came and said, Oh, let's start counting five, four, three. Deep down idea. When I tell you that yeah, that yeah dealt with ah 2018!

SPEAKER_02

Really?

SPEAKER_01

2018. 2018 was now in when I look back on it to be fair. Wait, you were in London that year, right? I was in London that year.

unknown

Yeah.

SPEAKER_01

And my dad had a very bad car crash in 2018. That's right. You remember that? It was so bad. And now when I reflect on it, I guess it was a great year because he survived the car crash. You know what I mean? But in that moment, like after the car crash, I could deal it. I said, I knew this on New Year's Day. I knew my new year that this wasn't gonna be a great year. That whole year just kicked my ass. Um, just gonna be honest. To the point that December 2019, did you not find me in the house of the Lord? Like December 2019, Crossover. I said I'm going to crossover service. I have some things to discuss with Jesus. Yeah, yeah. I'm not his strongest soldier. I need to tell him right now I'm not your strongest soldier, buddy. But anyway, yeah, I guess that was a really good scam scalp too.

SPEAKER_02

How about for you? What was your favorite episode and what was your favorite scam scam segment?

SPEAKER_01

I'm not gonna lie, I've loved all of them. Like genuinely, like, I love this podcast. I love the stories. I'm stuck in between two for my favorite episode, but I'm gonna I'm gonna pick. Okay, yeah, I'm gonna pick this one. The Dubai voice cloning one. Okay, okay. Oh my god. And I'm gonna tell you why. I'm not fully convinced I wouldn't fall for that. I'm crying. I'm not, I feel like if the circumstances were right, obviously not anymore, not today, hopefully. But if the circumstances were right, that is the kind of thing that could get me. Because I noticed two things about myself. I like to move quickly where possible. At work. In my personal life, I move very slow. I've been making a wedding mood board for five months. Like that's like I move quite slowly at home, but at work, I like to move fairly quickly, even if to say got it, and then I, you know, respond to an email within 10 minutes saying, you know, looking into it will respond, understood. It's just my training.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah.

SPEAKER_01

And I feel like under the right set of circumstances, the wrong number of hours of sleep, a long day, and you know, whatever. Obviously, I'm not in a job where I actually transfer funds, but under those set of circumstances, it's not impossible. That's okay. I just my heart literally when you were telling that story, I was so sad like the whole time. Because I was like, oh man, this guy's life. Because I wonder if he ever would be able to pick up a phone call again. Like somebody calls you and you're just like, no, you have to come to my home to deliver this message. And that I think you had said that was before AI, right? Like before general public AI, basically. It's not it wasn't a 2024, 2025 story.

SPEAKER_02

It wasn't, it wasn't. But I think that where we landed in terms of potential solutions was on like very analog solutions, right? Being like having codes with your family members so that you can verify who's calling if someone is asking for sensitive information, right?

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, I don't know if your workplace does this, but mine does. There's all these internal trainings on how to avoid, you know, things like this. But I mean, it's one of those main episodes that feels a little close to home from the possibility perspective. Like, as much as I love the Harvard story, I'm not starting work without being paid. It just would not happen to me. You know what I mean? Like, I I'm not working for a couple of months without payment. Like, I'm not getting a new employer completely sight on scene, even during COVID. There's just certain things I'm just not gonna do. Yeah, but that one, I was like, ooh, ooh, this was kind of close to home.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah. Yeah. That's such a good point. And you know, you work in banking as well, so it makes perfect sense. I mean also in a in a place or in a job where I'm working with money, and the level of urgency sort of ebbs and flows, I will say. But there are certain people who can send out emails that'll make me jump immediately into action, and I wouldn't think to verify what's going on there.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, yeah. And I think it's uh fallibility that's good to be aware of. Like there's certain people, or certain situations where my guard drops.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah.

SPEAKER_01

And that's good to be completely aware of because then when those should those situations roll around, you're able to say, my guard is dropping. Let me go ahead and make sure. Let me double verify, let me just make sure this is the right thing to do.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah, yeah.

SPEAKER_01

That was a creepy one.

unknown

That's a creepy one.

SPEAKER_01

My favorite scam scam, I think, has to be my favorite scam scam still has to be the Con Edison one. And I say that because they've called me again at least three times. Are you serious? I'm telling you the truth. In fact, I got one yesterday from a 914 area code, and they called me and they said, Oh, am I speaking with, you know, they said my phone name? And I said yes, because again, sometimes my clients call, I don't have their name saved down. I don't always know. I pick up phone calls if it's not a blocked number.

unknown

Yeah.

SPEAKER_01

So if it's a number I don't have saved, sometimes it's an area code that I have like a live deal going on, and I'll pick it up. And she says to me, Oh, I wanted to talk about your electrical company bill. I just started laughing and I hung up the phone. Because I was like, my electrical comp baby, you don't even know which one it is. I thought you were calling about it. I know you were there. Like broad electrical company bill. It happens all the time. Like I said on that scam scam, yeah, they have your phone number and your full name and the city you live in are probably somewhere on the internet. Right. Yeah. So it's not that surprising that that's information that people have. I'm more surprised, I'm assuming then it's networks of people, because I'm more surprised at the frequency of the calls I've received about the same stupid scam and the consistency of it. So somebody's falling for it. And it's not one group of scammers, it's probably you know different pockets of scammers that have the same kind of playbook. It's my favorite one because it's so practical. Like if you live in New York or on the East Coast, I suspect you will or you have gotten some kind of phone call to this end and you simply shouldn't fall for it.

SPEAKER_02

That's such a good point about it perhaps being different groups that are doing the exact same thing. And I say that because I'm just like, if they've called you, you've not fallen for it. In fact, you've called them back to tell them they're very stupid. Yes. I would think that they would have crossed you off of a list somewhere in their database of breached information that they have. But no, other people are still calling you. That's that's very, very curious.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah. I'm actually looking into this thing called Delete Me. I've heard about it on a couple of sort of financial personal finance YouTube shows, things like that. And they talk about it's a software tool that deletes your personal information from third-party sites. Because every time you buy something or you know, subscribe to something, oftentimes they will or can sell your data to third-party broker sites. And, you know, there's data breaches, and somewhere along the way, your information lands in some kind of back channel. You know, I don't know how the you know, weapons of darkness operate, but it lands somewhere there. And these guys, I believe, are able to scrub your data off of these third-party sites. And once you get it scrubbed, you should see a decline in those kinds of calls and emails and you know, third-party random things. So delete me if you hear this podcast. Uh, contact us so we have a job for you. And I think you have a job for us, more importantly. Yes.

unknown

Yes.

SPEAKER_01

But yeah, I think that one is super interesting because I can't figure out how to get them to stop calling me.

SPEAKER_02

That is, is delete me free or is it how does that work?

SPEAKER_01

I don't know the answer to that question, actually. I suppose it is free because the YouTube video I was watching, now I forget exactly which one it was, but he said he gifted it to his parents. So I'm assuming there was a price tag to that. I'm assuming there's a price tag to that.

SPEAKER_02

Okay.

SPEAKER_01

But I need to look into it. I thought about it yesterday after I got this other silly call, and I was like, mm, I should probably take action on this pretty soon. So look into it. I will as well. Yeah, okay, for sure. Alright. Well, I'm very excited for the coming episodes. I know we're going into a very brief pause as we do some in depth research for the next few episodes. What are you excited about coming down the pipeline, Ugo?

SPEAKER_02

Honestly, I am. I am excited about honestly gaining more listeners. Right. I think that we've had such a positive reception with this sort of first pilot season and being very intentional and putting out these, you know, initial episodes to people, seeing how it's taking, sort of taken up, sort of testing the waters. And yeah, we're really excited that like now that we've found our cadence, and hopefully our listeners who have been listening with us since episode one can notice a difference already between episode one and episode five. And even you know, now as we're just here discussing freely on this episode. And so we're hoping to just at least I hope to just continue to attract more listeners. Yeah. Right. I think that there are a lot of people who will be interested in the topics that we're worth talking about. And so I hope that we continue to continue to grow as we already have.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah. And honestly, I think the reception kind of blew me away. It's been very exciting. Also, like randomly, like a very engaged audience. I had somebody who was listening message me. I think on the episode I was talking about with the Dubai voice cloning, the scam scam on that episode. Was it that episode? Maybe it was a different episode. Now I forget. But he had reached out to me and it was an episode during a scam scam that we talked about terroristic threats. And we were talking about what the threshold was. Um, because I think this was the one you were talking about with the note. Somebody saying that you had hit their cars and I was trying to say, well, if they keep threatening you, I'm sure there's something you can do about that, right? And he messaged me and he goes, actually, yeah, you know, I've been on jury duty. And terroristic threats is really a charge, and the threshold is extremely low. Wow. Yeah. And I was like, Well, thank you for letting me know. Like, really, really great attentiveness to what we're saying. Somebody else reached out about Cassie, the heiress witch, and they were and they were like, her eyes really are hypnotizing. I'm crazy. I was like, uh, okay, don't look into deeply. So there's a lot of engagement, people providing that feedback. I'm excited to read the scam scams that come in during the pause. I'm really looking forward to hearing how you guys are avoiding being scammed or getting scammed. You know, that's okay. You didn't kill anybody, it's just getting scammed. So for me, that's like a big excitement element for sure.

SPEAKER_02

Oh, I love that. And very excited about our listeners writing in with scam scams as well. But I have some loaded up as well because I literally in the last week alone, three things have happened where I'm like, oh, this is podcast worthy, including in the hair shop yesterday, where I was like, let me take notes as this woman is telling her story because what am I hearing right now?

SPEAKER_01

I was saying we need to invite her to the podcast. I want to hear her straight from the horse's mouth. Straight from the horse's mouth. What scams are afoot? Um, I'm also excited for our main episode topics because I know we've been planning to cover influencers and parasocial scamming. I'm very, very eager to talk about some fun scams I discovered about um getting into universities across Africa. You know, we have like an SAT-like exam and how people are scamming.

SPEAKER_00

Oh my god.

SPEAKER_01

Um, there is a whole network. It was interesting. A whole network AI is being used somehow. No baby. Oh my god. No babies. And a really, really, really fun one out of France. I mean, he's going to jail, but you know what I mean. It's very elaborate. I find I'm quite impressed, parentheses negative, with these extremely elaborate scams. So I'm really looking forward to digging in on those and yeah, sharing them with everyone.

SPEAKER_02

I love that. And to our listeners, if there are, this is of course in addition to you guys sharing scam scam stories with us, but if there are, you know, high profile scams that you guys have come across in your country or wherever else, do just send us an email at infotnigerianprints.com. We would love to hear that. Because of course we do our own research just using Google and all of that. But if there's something that you have specifically heard about, please let us know because that's personally how I heard about our Harvard story. It was, yeah, I went for coffee with a friend, right? And she was like, Oh, have you heard of this story out of India? And I was like, tell me more.

SPEAKER_01

I don't know what you're talking about.

SPEAKER_02

So shout out to you, Aliyah, for that.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, and shout out to my friend Fukunda, who shares with me every scam he comes across. He just passes them and he comes across some fantastic stuff. I'm like, what areas of the internet are you on? So I'm excited to share some of those that he's passed on. And yeah, I'm thrilled. I'm thrilled with the response. I love working with you, Hugo. I feel like it's been just such a great fun time. And yes, as we go into the pause to finish up our research and just to reflect on the next few episodes. I'm hoping that when we emerge and we come back, we can sort of hit the ground running and yeah, continue to move forward on Nigerian Prince. It's so exciting.

SPEAKER_02

Yes, absolutely. Please, please, please talk to us, you guys, on Instagram, via email, we're on TikTok as well. So just send us messages. Text us if you have our numbers. We want to hear everything that you guys have to say.

SPEAKER_01

That's right. And if you're Conetizen, don't call me. I'm not gonna like it. Do not call.

SPEAKER_02

I have rocks in a corner. I will throw them.

SPEAKER_01

Well, listen, thank you guys for rocking with us over. Well, no pun intended. Thank you guys for rocking with us over the last five episodes. It's been such a blast. We've loved the reception. Please continue reposting, liking, engaging. And yeah, we will see you very soon in the next two weeks for the very next Unigerian Prince episode.

SPEAKER_02

Thanks everyone. Bye. Bye.

SPEAKER_00

You want your watch up my body. You want your watch up my body.
